The Initial Sketch

First, a detailed drawing is made showing the thickness of each ring based on the thickness of the wood, the inside and outside diameter of each ring, and part of the design to be used for the focus ring.

Aligning the Grain

After the pieces were cut they were laid out and numbered one to sixteen. The grain directions were oriented to facilitate turning and to avoid tearing and chatter.

Sanding the Segments

Each piece was sanded so they just fit the template. After the left side was sanded, the segment was flipped upside-down when sanding the right side so that if the sanding disk was not exactly 90 degrees, any error would cancel out.

Gluing Segments 1 and 2

The segment pieces where first glued in pairs. After glue is applied to the sides, they are rubbed together until the glue starts to set. The thumbs are used to align the outside edges of the pieces.

Removing Excess Glue

The excess glue is removed by rubbing the joint with a damp cloth.

Gluing segment pairs

The pairs of segment are next glued into groups of four that form a quarter (90 degrees) of the ring.

Gluing each half

The two "halves" (minus one piece) are now glued into an almost complete ring.

Gluing the 16th piece

Finally, after the 16th piece is carefully fitted (or the spare, 17th piece, if you accidentally sand too much of the 16th piece, trying to fit it) it is glued into place.
