Guest Demonstrator June 2001:
Jean-Francois Escoulen
Jean-Francois Escoulen is an internationally known turner who has taught workshops in Europe, Australia, and
across North America. He has been a woodturner for 28 years. After fifteen years of production spindle turning, he
began to turn one-of-a-kind pieces and to teach woodturning. He invented a special chuck that has enabled him to
create his distinctive multi-axis designs. He lives in southeastern France where he teaches students at all levels and
shares a shop with his wife, Monique, a cabinetmaker.
Demonstration Description
Jean-Francois will introduce a classical woodturning technique that can produce long and thin objects with strong
ornamental aspects. His demonstration will help you to improve your skills with the skew, gouge, and bedan. The
bedan is an unusual French tool that allows quick and accurate turning of finely detailed spindle work. Jean-
Francois's specialty is multi-axis turning. He invented an exceptional technique that allows you to tilt the axis and
create forms you never dreamed possible. He will be sharing examples of his work and hopefully you will find
inspiration for your own designs.
