Guest Demonstrator May 2002:
Ron Fleming

"I love nature. For many years I watched and helped my father and grandfather work in wood. By observing and learning, thinking and searching I found a way to express the feelings and thoughts I have about nature . . . it's beauty and it's passages. Woodturning is a natural way for me to combine my capabilities as an artist and a craftsman."

"Whether it be the falling leaves of autumn swirling into a frozen form or a single flower bud unfolding in spring, each piece gives me an opportunity to make a statement about the never ending rituals of nature's evolution. Each form in wood becomes a captured moment in time of it's own existence. And every vessel gives me a way to express my feelings about the things I see around me and to share these visions with others."

Ron Fleming is a native of Oklahoma. He was a professional illustrator and designer and has now turned his full attentions toward wood sculpture and sculpting on the turned vessel form. He is represented in Santa Fe, Los Angeles and Philadelphia.

He is active in the American Association of Woodturners and the Wood Turning Center where he is currently serving on the board of trustees.

Ron has received many awards for his work, including a 1989 purchase award from the Vision Makers Show which was sponsored by the States Arts Council of Oklahoma, a purchase award from the 1992 Regional Craft Biennial, sponsored by the Arkansas Arts Center, Little Rock, AR, and the Grand Prize Award in the 1991 American Craft Awards, sponsored by Kraus Sikes, Inc.

In 1993 Michael Monroe, the curator of the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery, asked Ron to donate a piece to the White House permanent craft collection as part of it's observance of the Year of the American Craft.
