Guest Demonstrator May 2006:
John Mascoll

My first exposure to woodturning began in 1989, while searching for some form of extracurricular activity that would allow my creative juices to flow. Within the first year of turning mainly open form vessels, I found myself striving to become more artistic with my work and progressing towards the one-of-a-kind hollow form style of turning. The choice of wood as a media was natural for me because of my early exposure while growing up and working with my father (a Shipwright and Carpenter) in my native Barbados.

As both woodturning artist and teacher, I am constantly reminded of the importance of remaining a student of one's own work. This philosophy has allowed me to remain receptive to the many influences that surround me, including objects and forms from other cultures, the infinite variety of the materials I use, and my personal connection to a vessel's form. The evolution of my work has taken many directions over the years, with each stage serving as a foundation on which to create and build.

Today, my work is a testament to the progress I have made and my efforts to expose the beauty of nature in the different types of woods I use to create my vessels. I will, on occasion, employ carvings and surface embellishments to enhance some of my work.
