President's Letter

Mike Fiantaca photoApril 2008

Our March meeting was very well attended. Mike Mahoney's demonstration kept many of our members at the meeting for the full day. Sorry if you missed it. Either way, videos should be available for rental from the library by lunch time.

Our demonstrator in April (on the 17th) will be Binh Pho. He escaped from Vietnam in 1979, and came to the US. He is now an accomplished artist that is well know for his thin-walled turning, which are commonly pierced and airbrushed. His work is simply beautiful. Be sure not to miss it.

All that CMW has been and is today is because of its members. Many of our members are part of the Above & Beyond group - an updated list of these generous folks is on our web site here. (An updated list is also displayed when our meetings begin each month.) Be sure to thank them for their generosity.

Are you a member of the AAW? Did you know that AAW members are protected under a liability policy when turning at CMW sanctioned events? Membership also gets you 4 of the quarterly issues of American Woodturner - an excellent and inspiring woodturning journal. This year’s Symposium will be held June 20-22 in Richmond, Virginia. (That's next month!) For more information on the Symposium, go to www.woodturner.org/sym/sym2008 . Being an AAW member also gets you a discount on the price of the admission to the symposium.

Even though it is only April, it's time to starting thinking about some of our upcoming fall activities. In September, we will have our annual auction. CMW has many new members looking for tools, different types of wood, and other things you may not be using. Consider selling these at the auction.  In early October, we'll have our first CMW picnic. This is a time to get together with fellow members to meet family members, discuss techniques in detail, show off what you're working on, and more. Please contact Gary Bills if you have any questions. In November, we will decorate the Hospice tree again. We need about 200 ornaments if we are to match the count from previous years. This is a great use of spare time, as it builds your skills and is rewarding too.

The CMW library continues to grow. Art Mendelow has been finding and purchasing many new items lately. Over 20 new videos and books were added last month alone. Be sure to take advantage of this valuable member resource.

Please contact me if you ever have questions or comments.

Hoping this letter finds you knee deep in shavings,

Mike Fiantaca
