About the Demo
'ZenBellishing'


"During the demo I'll demonstrate and explain the process that I use to embellish my work.
I’ll start with a turned piece ready to carve using Foredom and micro carvers.
Then wood burning to add more detail.
I’ll explain the last steps to prepare for the coloring technique and finish."





Artist Background

Rick is an accomplished wood turner that has lived in Memphis since 1968.

Rick has spent time with notable wood turners like Michael Mode, Malcolm Tibbetts, Ray Key and David Marks, Graeme Priddle and others. Most of his works involves time at the lathe, but uses any of the tools associated with a carpenters shop.

He has been a maker, learner and teacher of fine craft and art for the last 20 years. He has won merit awards at the Pink Palace Arts in the Park and participated in three different Best of Tennessee Art Shows. His work is in a permanent collection of the Tennessee Museum of Art and was recently shown at Arrowmont (2024).

Rick was honored as the master in the 2019 Tennessee Art Commission’s Master/ Apprentice program. His work is currently in the Tennessee Arts Commission’s virtual gallery.

Rick belongs to the Tennessee Association of Craft Artists (Southwest), Memphis Arts Collective, Mid South Wood Turners Guild, American Association of Wood Turners. He creates and teaches in his studio shop in Memphis.

Zoom access

CMW members unable to attend in person are invited to participate on Zoom
Advance registration for the event is required in order to be provided online access

To register:
1) Log in to your CMW account online
2) From the Event in the CMW calendar click the REGISTER FOR ZOOM button
3) Choose 'Sign up yourself' and click NEXT
4) Click COMPLETE REGISTRATION. You'll receive two emails from CMW –
     one confirming registration and one providing the Zoom link
5) At the time of the meeting or shortly before, choose the CMW email that starts 
    'This message contains important videoconferencing information...' 
    Click the URL after 'Link to Event' halfway down the page. This will take you to Zoom.
6) Click OPEN ZOOM, and under that click LAUNCH MEETING.  

   - If you join before the system is turned on you should see the circling arrow.
   - Once the system is on but the Zoom meeting not active you should see the CMW logo.
   - When the cameras are activated you will be admitted to the meeting
.
   - If for any reason you're not getting in, reregister from scratch


Workshop

Rick will offer a day-long workshop at the CMW's Turning Learning Center in Arden on Sunday, August 17.  
Advance registration through the separate Event on CMW's event calendar is required and a fee will apply.
Active CMW membership is required to register.
