About the Class
This will be a carving class - a feather! - involving power carvers and burners, not a turning class.
If possible, students will be asked to prepare in advance and bring in one or two practice pieces with the following guidelines provided by Christine:
A 6” tall, 3”-4” wide vessel ought to give enough space.
It does not matter if it is not hollowed.
Just smooth on the outside, sanded to 220 or 320 would be best.
A flat surface would work, too. If it is a turned plate with a wide rim.
The thickness of a hollow form or plate could be left at 1/3”.
Dry maple, cherry, poplar or Bradford pear are good for this.
Plan ahead. You are welcome to take advantage of one of the upcoming Open Turnings at the TLC, or if you are in the Stantons' two-day course the weekend prior, to prepare pieces.
If a student for any reason is not able to prepare one or more practice pieces, Christine and the club will be sure to have a few on hand.
Same with tools. If you have a power carver in the 45,000 RPM range (faster than a basic Dremel, like a Mastercarver-Micropro) and/or a burner, please plan to bring. The TLC has some available but not enough for the entire class. Some experience with these tools will be important, but high-level expertise is not required.
Also important will be a dust mask and small desk fan.
FOR A PREVIEW OF CHRISTINE'S TECHNIQUES, INCLUDING A DEMO ON CASTING PEWTER ADORNMENTS, NOTE HER FREE DEMONSTRATION STARTING AT 10:30 AM ON THE DAY PRIOR AT THE FOLK ART CENTER AVAILABLE TO ALL LIVE AND VIA ZOOM TO CMW MEMBERS UNABLE TO GET TO THE FAC.
SEE SEPARATE EVENT IN THE CMW CALENDAR.
Christine started woodturning in 2016 and was immediately hooked after turning her first piece. Within just two years, she became a full-time woodturner in 2018 due to the high demand for her work at shows and galleries.
The pandemic in 2019 altered Christine’s woodturning journey, leading her to begin carving birds of prey. Since then, relief carving and sculpting with locally sourced woods have become a major part of her artistic practice.
Today, commissions, demonstrations, and the growing demand for her classes all reflect the quality and intricacy of Christine’s work. Christine is an active member of both the AAW and the CMW and lives in Western North Carolina.
